Charlotte: Bolero Workshop

Infinity Ballroom
Oct 18, 2014

Objectives

  1. To broaden the range of skills and expression in Bolero. Leaders: Entertain your partner with a great variety of well chosen and executed figures. Followers: Develop your skills so you are ready for that great leader when he comes along. Be able to dance every figure possible alone (like a teacher can!)
  2. To add to and improve all the Cuban dances with the skills and information learned in the Bolero

Routine

  1. Basic to PP SQQ SQQ
  2. Side Lock to Lunge SQQ&S; S
  3. Drag; Reverse Pivot SQQ
  4. Five Step Under Arm Turn QQQQ
  5. Double Crossover Break SQQS&; QQ
  6. Under Arm Turn SQQ

Principles

  1. The Bolero has much in common choreographically with the other Cuban dances: Mambo, Rumba, Cha Cha and Salsa. Share figures across these dances where it works for you.
  2. Bolero is the only lyrical Cuban dance. The other Cuban dances are rhythmic primarily.
  3. Back rock on the ball of the foot with the heel up very high, using a hard ankle for the best support. If the heel is too close to the floor it is too weak and unsupportive.
  4. Use the Basic Step sparingly. When it is used, it should turn. The Basic should be replaced by the Cross Body Lead whenever possible as the transition or thinking figure.
  5. The line figures (Lunge and Drag) are borrowed from the other lyrical, or smooth, dances.
