Principles
- The Bolero has much in common choreographically with the other Cuban dances: Mambo, Rumba, Cha Cha and Salsa. Share figures across these dances where it works for you.
- Bolero is the only lyrical Cuban dance. The other Cuban dances are rhythmic primarily.
- Back rock on the ball of the foot with the heel up very high, using a hard ankle for the best support. If the heel is too close to the floor it is too weak and unsupportive.
- Use the Basic Step sparingly. When it is used, it should turn. The Basic should be replaced by the Cross Body Lead whenever possible as the transition or thinking figure.
- The line figures (Lunge and Drag) are borrowed from the other lyrical, or smooth, dances.
