Technique
- Remember the two warm-up exercises.
- Do not drop or break the body. Support the frame with the core and the base.
- Move from one mid-weight position to the next, not from foot to foot.
- Emphasize side steps. All outside partner steps are sideward, as well as the step preceding any outside partner step.
- There are two methods of changing position: sliding (outside partner) and rolling (PP).
- Do not over lead. Leading is done primarily by weight change. Be able to dance a whole routine without moving your feet. The body actions that go with the steps are the real dancing.
Jive: Change of Places
- Do not drop or break the body.
- Practice with the free arm straight out to the side and ridiculously straight.
- Never be without the barre. An imaginary connection provides reliable stability and leverage.
- Turns are on the accented beats (2 and 4)
- Torque, angle and rotate the body at all times, independently of the neck.
- Focus on connection and spacing.
- Toe Heel Swivels: The pressure in the hands alternates between push and pull, but one hand is always doing each.
Beginner
Review Waltz while hearing “1&2&3&” on every measure.

Start over.
Tango
- Alternate Two Closed Boxes with Two Open Boxes, using the timing SSQ throughout.
- Dance sensuously: the feet are staccato, the body keeps moving (legato).
Rumba: After the Hockey Stick, add 1-3 of Open Basic and two measures of Back Walk. Restart with Alemana.
Review Cha Cha and Samba.
Intermediate
Samba
- See Bronze routine through Reverse Turn, especially Solo Spot Voltas.
- Use the Tango formula for sensuousness.
- Every step is taken as an excuse to dance a hip action. On the right foot the right hip moves forward, side to the right, then back, in a figure eight motion. On the left foot it is to the left.
Viennese Waltz (incorporating inside/outside of turn principles)
- Natural Turn, starting and ending facing DC 2 or 4 Bars
- Right Foot Change Step, ending facing DW 1 Bar
- Reverse Turn, starting and ending facing DW 2 or 4 Bars
- Left Foot Change Step, ending facing DC 1 Bar
Restart.
Review Waltz and Quickstep Double Reverse Spin amalgamations.
