Advanced Standard – Foxtrot: Bounce Fallaway with Weave Ending (S&QQ QQQQ)
- Use slight lilt (Down, up, down, up) on first four steps
- Leader rolls hips open to Fallaway Position, Follower rolls closed then slides across his hips to move outside partner.
- Advanced variation/exercise: Follower grapevines from fallaway to outside partner after first four steps.
- Three Step: Follower turns head to right.
- Dance “tight:” Keep the connection/frame hyper-responsive.
- The two steps in every promenade/fallaway position are not equally turned out. There should be a subtle rotation of the hips between the steps.
- Change of Places R to L with Lady’s Extra Spin
- Overturned Change of Place L to R (second chasse is Sailor Shuffle)
- Simple Spin
- Repeat figures 2 and 3.
Advanced Latin – Jive
Jive Technique
- Stay connected: Stay “tight,” again.
- Tic constantly and in sync with partner and music.
Samba: Count “1e&a” or “tic-ca-tic-ca” throughout.
Beginner
Waltz/Quickstep/Rumba/Jive: Review
Tango
Begin facing DW. Two Walks, curving to face DC (SS); Reverse Turn, Lady Outside (QQS QQS)
Remember: Devotion to the motion creates the emotion. There are three different moods created by the walks, open box and closed finish.
Cha Cha: Three Cha Cha Chas
Exercise: Change weight with feet together, rotating hips, without bouncing.
Intermediate Samba
- Basic with Foot Change
- Shadow Position Section
- Volta Foot Change
- Two Whisks
- Lady’s Under Arm Volta
- Whisk to Promenade Position
- Walk in PP
- Side Walk
- Criss Cross Volta (man in front)
- Two Criss Cross Bota Fogos
- Criss Cross Volta
- Two Whisks
Start over with Basic, but turning to face LOD.
Samba Technique
- Use figure eight hip action with partner: Back into each sideward action.
- Three Slipping Actions: Voltas, and the two types of walks
Jive Technique
- Keep connected hands and arms low and still for stability.
- Use connection #1 on Basic chasses, connection #2 on back rock. The connection should be stronger immediately before it changes to a different connection.
Standard
Quickstep: Natural Turn (SQQ), Back Lock (SQQS) and Running Finish (QQS)
Remember exercise: walk outside partner on toes with random weight shifts to side to indicate a crossing action.
Tango Technique
- Dance from a mid-weight position between the feet to mid-weight (to achieve sharper steps)
- Avoid these breaks in the body:
- Sides dropping or turning off partner
- Neck overturning or dropping
- Arms going too far behind shoulders.
Foxtrot Technique
- Beautifully decorate/articulate every foot and ankle action.
- The more it moves, the better it looks and the less technical problems show. A tall person only looks good moving well. A short person is only noticed if moving well.
